We would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone of the chance to submit an abstract to the 2012 Poster Fair. The Poster Fair at the CAPHC Annual Conference is one of the premier events. We provide more than four hours of dedicated poster viewing time, and a chance to compete for a prize package from CAPHC, CIHR-IHDCYH and the McMaster Child Health Research Institute.

Our local and national conference planning committee is now hard at work filling the program with exciting and engaging speakers, and we are finding some interesting ways to showcase the wonderful city that is Vancouver! The program is already shaping up with Michael Decterand Neil Seeman bringing high level Insight into strategies and options for transforming health care and engaging patients and families to improve health system performance. They will then be asked to join our host for the afternoon, CBC’s Ian Hanomansing, along with an additional panel member, Dr. Maureen O’Donnell, Executive Director of Child Health BC, to continue the discussion.

Olympic gold medalist and performance expert Adam Kreek, will kick off Tuesday, Oct 30 with motivational session followed by the conference’s concurrent sessions:

1. Navigating Health 2.0 - Apps or Oranges Without Going Bananas! - a look at innovative examples of using social media and mobile applications to improve health outcomes for children.
2. Beyond the Lean tools: What is at the Heart of Unstoppable Healthcare Innovation and Continuous Improvement? - a look beyond Lean and into the heart of what it means to shift culture toward innovation and integration for improved system performance improvement?
3. Improving the Care of Children and Youth Through Clinical Research - will bring the experiences of the Innovations in Acute Care and Technologies Research Cluster (iACT)to demonstrate the impact of clinical research on the health outcomes of children, while generating new synergies among clinical researchers and practitioners.
4. Challenging Culture and Creativity: Developing the Canadian Research-Focused Hospital of the Future - an interactive discussion looking at solutions for inspiring Canadian research focused hospitals.

With industry leaders like Michael Decter and Neil Seeman we are sure to gain 'Insight' into how we can continue to improve the services we provide to Canada's children and youth.

CBC host, Ian Hanomansing is sure to engage the audience as he hosts an exciting panel on Improving Health System Performance, and we certainly expect an 'Olympic' class performance from gold medal rower, Adam Kreek.

Once agian the CAPHC Annual Conference will be the paediatric health care event of the year.

The 2012 Canadian Association of Paediatric Health Centres (CAPHC) Annual Conference invites abstract submissions for consideration as poster presentation within the conference program. The Poster Session at the CAPHC Conference has grown into one of the premier events at our annual meeting, providing an ideal venue to showcase and view innovative research, exciting programs and unique strategies taking place in the area of child and youth health. This year, we are requesting posters under the following categories:  

• Clinical Research: A research project undertaken in a pediatric population.  Research using human subjects or their confidential information must indicate ethical approval and informed consent have been obtained
• Innovation in Clinical Practice: A project that focuses on changing clinical practice within a particular organization. The innovation may be in the clinical practice, the evaluation methodology, or the knowledge mobilization plan.
• System Innovation:  A project that focuses on changing practices that has implications for a wide number of organizations. The innovation may be in the practice, the evaluation methodology, or the knowledge mobilization plan.
• Family - Centered Care: A project that demonstrates family-centered care principles, both in the content of the project, and by involving families and/or young people in the design, evaluation, and dissemination of the project.

With both attended and unattended poster sessions there is plenty of time for networking and partnership development.

Last year’s prize package from CIHR, McMaster Child Health Research Institute and CAPHC has created a fantastic and friendly competition around the poster session. This year’s event will see the poster competition expanded and open to all posters on display at the event. We will NOT be selecting finalists based on abstracts.

It's that time of year again where we start thinking about next year's annual CAPHC conference.  The 2012 CAPHC Annual Conference will be held in beautiful Vancouver, BC, at the Westin Bayshore Hotel, from October 28 to 31, 2012.  

Our local and national planning committee members are busy building an exciting program of interesting world class speakers along the theme, "Insight into Child & Youth Healthcare:  Improving System Performance using Information, Integration and Innovation".

There will be much more information in the coming months, and as always, the most up to date information will be at www.conference.caphc.org.

Dr. Shoo Lee, Dr. Michael Evans, the panel with Dr. Brian Goldman, Ed’s Story and the Social Media concurrent session received strong accolades and continue to generate a buzz throughout the community.  We heard many positive comments during the conference about the sponsored breakfast sessions, which were a new addition this year. From the survey more than 75% of the delegates want to see us continue with these sessions for next year.  As with every year our survey provides lots of suggestions for improvement and creative ideas to make each year exciting and new, so thank you to everyone who took the time to respond and provide your feedback and opinions.  

We would also like to inform you that we have posted much of the information from the conference on the CAPHC Annual Conference website, in the ‘Archive’ section. There are powerpoint presentations, copies of the programs, abstracts, and we hope to have the audio recordings of some the presentations in the coming weeks.

Please note that many of our presenters (ie: Dr. Michael Evans) used presentation software that did not allow for us to post slides, many of our panel sessions did not use slide presentations at all, and some are not able to share their slides (ie: publication embargo, use of patient pictures, etc).

On a final note, be sure to start thinking early about attending next year at the Westin Bayshore in Vancouver, BC. Our Vancouver colleagues are already chomping at the bit to get started on the planning, and from the survey more than 85% of this year’s delegates are planning to attend next year, so space will be at a premium!!
