2011 CAPHC Annual Conference Archive Now Available

It’s hard to believe a month has passed since the 2011 CAPHC Annual Conference in Ottawa. With over 100 responses (and counting) to the delegate satisfaction survey we once again have heard that our CAPHC colleagues share our opinion that this year was one of the best ever!!

Dr. Shoo Lee, Dr. Michael Evans, the panel with Dr. Brian Goldman, Ed’s Story and the Social Media concurrent session received strong accolades and continue to generate a buzz throughout the community.  We heard many positive comments during the conference about the sponsored breakfast sessions, which were a new addition this year. From the survey more than 75% of the delegates want to see us continue with these sessions for next year.  As with every year our survey provides lots of suggestions for improvement and creative ideas to make each year exciting and new, so thank you to everyone who took the time to respond and provide your feedback and opinions.

We would also like to inform you that we have posted much of the information from the conference on the CAPHC Annual Conference website, in the ‘Archive’ section. There are powerpoint presentations, copies of the programs, abstracts, and we hope to have the audio recordings of some the presentations in the coming weeks.

Click here to view the conference archive!

Please note that many of our presenters (ie: Dr. Michael Evans) used presentation software that did not allow for us to post slides, many of our panel sessions did not use slide presentations at all, and some are not able to share their slides (ie: publication embargo, use of patient pictures, etc).

On a final note, be sure to start thinking early about attending next year at the Westin Bayshore in Vancouver, BC. Our Vancouver colleagues are already chomping at the bit to get started on the planning, and from the survey more than 85% of this year’s delegates are planning to attend next year, so space will be at a premium!!

CAPHC 2011 Motivational Session - Ed’s Story: The Dragon Chronicles

Over the past number of years we have had the pleasure of bringing some truly motivational sessions to our delegates.  This year is no different.  Ed’s Story:  The Dragon Chronicles is a play that was created as a result of a journal kept by a 16 year old bone cancer patient at the IWK.  This journal chronicles the last four months of Ed’s life and gives us a window into the life of a teen approaching the cusp of adulthood, who teaches us all that hope and humor are absolutely possible even in the midst of great tragedy.

Ed is a trickster, a skater, a gamer, a brother, son and friend. He’s the kid who moons the whole school on a dare and the guy who always sticks up for the underdog. Ed is a sensitive young man with an aggressive cancer. From Ed’s journal entries, and interviews with his circle of family, friends and health-care team, a “verbatim” portrait is drawn of a boy on the verge of adulthood fighting not only a medical battle, but a battle to experience his life on his terms.

After a number of successful performances, ranging from Paediatric Grand Rounds at the IWK to the Atlantic Fringe Festival, we are very excited to be bringing these talented performers to share this very special story.

This performance will be followed by a discussion with several of our IWK colleagues who were involved in this project, giving the audience an opportunity to see the impact on clinical care that this moving story has had.

Change in Concurrent Session

Due to unexpected circumstances, we have changed one of our concurrent sessions.  “From the Boardroom to the Bedside” will no longer be available.  All delegates that were registered for that session have been informed.

That session has been replaced with a very exciting session titled, “Best in Practice Medication Systems: Improving Quality and Safety Measures”.

Today’s hospitals face an ever increasing demand for quality and safety in delivering care.  The public is growing less tolerant of safety infractions where they affect their loved one, the patient.  Each hospital across the country is accredited by Accreditation Canada whose programs for quality and safety have become even more comprehensive and demanding of performance and robust system design.

This session will focus on quality and safety standards of the medication system, the development of technology to assist in the process and the bar code technology that ties everything together.

Participants should leave with an improved understanding of how a high performance medication system achieves best in class quality and safety – by embracing the healthcare providers involved, by deploying the appropriate technology and by using the bar code to tie everything together into the patient record. The result is a comprehensive and integrated medication system delivering best in class quality and safety.

Abstract Submission Deadline has Been Extended!!

The abstract submission deadline for poster presentations has been extended to Monday, June 6, 2011.  We opened our abstract submission process approximately one week later than ususal, which has presented challenges for a number of groups that were wishing to submit.

In order for the Poster Committee to have time to review, and inform the accepted poster, we will not be able to provide any additional extensions, so please be sure to get your abstract in before this deadline!

CLICK HERE to submit your abstract.

The poster session will see all posters displayed throughout Monday and Tuesday (October 17,18), with plenty of time dedicated to poster and exhibit viewing on both days.  We will also be continuing with our exciting prize packages thanks to the support of the McMaster Child Health Research Institute and the Canadian Institute of Health Research - Institute of Human Development, Child and Youth Health.
More information on the poster session, including details for submitting and abstract can be found on this website by navigating to the “Poster” button above.
